His keys, phone and wallet were all still inside the house. The garage door in which they enter and leave the house was slightly ajar. No signs of forced entry or a struggle were evident. It was later realized that Kelly's 9 mm handgun was missing from the residence.
Shortly after, a large search took place. Friends, family and volunteers all searched as well as scent tracking dogs but there was no sign of Kelly. A nearby gas station's camera system revealed a figure walking by in the darkness around 4:30 am the morning, but the quality was too poor to definitively say it was Kelly.
By the beginning of February of 2015 a body was found in Lake Lanier, just a few miles from both Kelly and his dad's house. It was the body of Kelly Nash. He was found to have a gunshot wound according to authorities.
After the discovery of the body, the case became silent. News reports ceased. Updates stopped. It is almost as if, once the mystery was solved, a whole new mystery began. One with a bunch of new questions we may never have answers for. As of 2016 there's really been only been one new story I've found.
As far as my thoughts on this case, let's first look at the Disappeared episode. One thing I found interesting is the dogs used in the search. Almost right off the bat, one of the tracking dogs went straight to a dock on Lake Lanier. Amazingly, the dog was correct as to where Kelly was, but it was either ignored or disregarded initially. I'm not sure why they never considered the lake, perhaps due to the cold weather but either way the tracking dog was impressive.
Ultimately, based on the episode and the subsequent, but few, news articles about this case, I feel Kelly Nash was maybe going through a difficult time in his life and perhaps chose to commit suicide. He didn't seem to be caught up in anything risky, and nothing seems to suggest foul play to me. I simply think he was overwhelmed and ended his life. By walking to the lake, going onto the dock and then falling into the water, he maybe wanted to attempt to spare his family some grief in hopes he would not be found and seen only as a missing person. Surely, that would explain the lack of coverage after he was found, and the lack of any details really. There's no further information because it's not a criminal case and no foul play is involved. If you read any of the statements from the family after the discovery of his body you quickly see they are "looking for answers" but they don't project any loss that would be attributed to a random killer, a bad guy, or anyone responsible. There's no call to justice for punishment to any particular culprit. I understand everyone grieves differently but to me it seems like this could be due to:
The family knows it is suicide, but doesn't want to come out and publicly say it.
The family thinks it is a homicide, but police feel strongly it is a suicide.
Based on the family's desire for privacy, I'd go with the first choice. Regardless of what happened, it is a horrible loss for any family and while an element of mystery to this still exists, I completely understand as to why this would be dealt with privately. Whatever the outcome is, I hope friends and family can one day find some comfort and closure to this. Losing someone is never easy.
This case has bothered me since I saw the episode of Disappeared almost a year ago. I actually Google his name about once a month to see if there are any updates. I wish the police would confirm whether or not he was shot with his own gun because that would answer a lot. Although maybe they have shared it with the family. The things that bother me about the suicide theory is that his game wasn't stopped or paused..it just went idle- not necessarily evidence but still odd, the lack of any suicide note, & lastly that he would have walked in freezing temperatures in pajamas. I have family in Buford & that wouldn't have been any easy walk. He would've had to climb steep hills, through forrests, unpaved terrain, etc. I also read somewhere that the gunshot wound was near the back of his head (doesn't make it true of course). Suicide certainly could be an option but it's just so strange to me. To me it sounded like he heard something, went downstairs to peek out the door and was met with foul play but just as baffling as the suicide theory..why? My heart just breaks for his family. If I'm still so bothered by the peculiarities I can't imagine how they feel. Sometimes facts surface years later so maybe that will happen. We can only hope!
ReplyDelete4 years later....still same info. I just caught the Disappeared episode. Obviously I am slow. 🙂 Fully invested now, and thought google would help me figure it all out.....nope. It’s all so strange. I do agree the girlfriend is hiding info. I don’t think she hurt him, but he called her about the time he walked out, left a silent muffled few word msg. (The show said) I think maybe things with her and life as a whole was a lot. Definitely think they fought she tossed him from bed he went to the couch she came out to argue some more and slammed the door and he left. Suicidal seems reasonable, but this is not factual and is just my tiny brain. Would be interesting to speak to her now, maybe she would admit she knew he was tfeeling a certain way. I don’t know but I want to respect people’s privacy, but at least knowing where the gun shot wound was and if it was his gun would help us have a better idea. Wonder if autopsy reports are public record, I’ve never wondered until now. Either way it’s a heartbreaking story no matter what happened. Hate to think if he was suicidal and no one noticed him struggling and he struggled alone. By all accounts he was a good man. Just sad.

I think the unanswered questions here are simply due to a family that wants privacy at this point.
I feel there is more to this story. A suicidal mind would not have interest in a game, you actually would withdraw from hobbies. I want to know what he bought at the store, I didn't see that part in the show. As if he was the only target, the girlfriend was OK,no items stolen, no wallet or phone taken nor the vehicle. It had to be someone from school, his relationship, or work related because it was personalized to him only.

DeleteThis is not always true. I have lost two people to suicide. They were engaged in normal life activities and making plans for the future. Some people hide the pain they feel and don't know how to make it better. They just want the pain to stop. From my point of view staying up all night playing video games when you don't feel good is a sign that something is wrong. Especially when you have a big day at work coming up.

ReplyDeleteI just saw the ID episode. I totally agree that it was suicide. I think that he and his girlfriend had a fight that night that's why she asked him to sleep on the couch. Who tells their loved one to leave the bed because they're coughing or not feeling well? I believe that they argued and he felt overwhelmed. She won't admit to that because she may be feeling guilty about the outcome. In any case that was a selfish thing to do to his family, because he was truly loved. I pray for his family
ReplyDeleteI know lots of women who ask their men to sleep on the couch or another room bcuz they can't sleep with coughing, snoring etc. Especially when the woman has to work early. Now I'm the kind of person who can sleep with noise, but almost all my friends and aquantences have their men sleep in another room in that case. Most do "baby" their men if ill, then leave the room to sleep.

I do wish they would let the public know the outcome...where was the gunshot wound and did they find the gun to rule out foul play. I do think if they felt that it was foul play there would be more about it because they would be looking for the person who did it. I personally think it's feasible that his girlfriend asked him to sleep in another room if he was coughing & keeping her awake. When my husband or I are sick or wake up coughing we just automatically go sleep somewhere else as not to disturb the other. I also would have no problem asking him to go into another room if he was keeping me awake.
ReplyDeleteI saw this sad story as well. All Disappeared episodes are so sad. I don't think the girlfriend is involved. I think she was just glad media is giving attention to the case. Remember she has been dealing with it for a while and has desensitized somewhat. The fact that the law enforcement hasn't released info leads me to believe they're still working the case and protecting information. I think everyone by now should know the internet is not safe. He was playing a connected game. Did emotions get out of control and he left to meet and have it out with someone?

I saw in the show they can't find the gun? Law enforcement should use a metal detector made for water.
I did know someone who lived his life completely normally planning things with his family,working, happy-go-lucky, super friendly and just exuded happiness. He just committed suicide one day. So it happens that way; no warning signs. Then there's the Subliminal Distraction theory. He did have a full plate and depending how his computer & environment was set up maybe it's a plausible explanation. This would be more tragic if it was preventable by rearranging the gaming/computer environment. Overall,I just feel so sad for his Mother, Father, sister, girlfriend and friends.

ReplyDeleteI definitely think it's possible that perhaps there was a dispute between Kelly and the girlfriend that night. Maybe even a pattern they weren't getting along prior to his disappearance.
While suicide can be a spur of the moment decision, I would think more often than not it's progression of despair and then the final "last straw" moment.
I think the answers here lie in Kelly's personal life ; with much of that being between him and his GF, I doubt we'd ever get a clear answer from her because it wouldn't portray her in a flattering way.
maybe in Kelly's family begin depressed or having a mental illness was looked down on. His family was well known and respected. I see many stories about children who hide struggles because it doesn't fit with the public imagine. No one's life is as perfect as everyone was saying in the show. Why would it be about Jessica? His family defiantly could have shared cause of death. The way this story was shut down says suicide. Otherwise his family would be demanding a murder investigation the say way they demanded he be listed as a missing person before the 24 hours were up.

She was the last one to see him alive and to be sleeping so close to where he was at and not hear him leave? Also they have dogs if someone was around outside I'm sure the dogs would have alerted them that something was wrong. I still have a strong feeling that the girlfriend was involved in some way or another. Still very hard for family and friends my heart goes out to you!!

I think he committed suicide there so his parents would find him quickly and not have to worry about him for a long time or clean up after him. I think he had a fight with his girlfriend, who, coincidentally, had a husband that passed away before she met Kelly

ReplyDeleteA few ponts points bother me about the suicide angle: who walks two miles in 32deg weather to commit suicide at 400am? A man like Kelly with no known depressive or drug issues? Kelly could have had a despondent interval and decided at 400am..hey I'll kill myself and walked 2 miles to shoot himself. Exactly where is the gunshot? I read "the back of his head" How do you shoot yourself in "the back of the head"? The temple or mouth is a sure shot. The family and the police have settled on "suicide". As far as the family is concerned. He is gone. Suicide for the family would be a very,very alarming way for their "favored son" to die. A guy who did everything right in his life to this point...hard to accept by family.
I think the girlfriend is not totally upfront about their relationship. She may know "secrets" about Kelly's "mental" state...maybe about something that would drive this guy to kill himself.
Police and family closed the case when the body had a gunshot somewhere..Kelly was dead. The family of Kelly cried and could not keep their composure on camera no matter when the episode was shot. The girlfriend was "dry-eyed". This women who was close to him for several years...lived together... she never got "choked-up...ever. I think the girlfriend had some impact on Kelly's decision to "commit suicide" if that is what actually happened.
The GFs demeanor compared to the rest of the family was completely different. The way she spoke and went over details on TV...just so nonchalant, like someone rattling off a menu or a grocery list. Very strange.

If he committed suicide, where is the gun? Where is the autopsy report? So damn sad for anyone to die, especially so young and seemingly full of life. RIP.
DeleteSo many unanswered questions here and highly disturbing. Just too difficult to speculate without knowing details of investigation. I found the girlfriend to be genuine. I did not see many photo ops of her with the family. I'm sure there is some guilty feelings on her part, unjustified or not. If it were me (assuming she resides in the shared home), I would not remain in the residence I shared with my late boyfriend who died under such suspicious circumstances. Just a thought.

After watching this episode, I felt like something just was not right about the whole case. I myself had to go through having a loved one, my grandfather go missing for a week and then was found deceased in the lake near by. It is a horrible thing and pain to deal with.. but after seeing this show, I did a little research.. what I find weird is another missing man in the same area on the same night... everyone needs to Google Samuel Waters!! You will find out that this man went missing that same night as Kelly and it was found that he was probably murdered that same night just afew houses from where Kelly's body was found, same road!! I find this case very unusual, and it left me uncomfortable, check it out!! Let me know what you all think!!!
ReplyDeleteI looked up Samuel Waters. He appears to have been murdered by someone he knew. I do t feel the 2 cases are related. I feel Kelly most likely committed suicide. Some people can be high functioning and depressed enough to commit suicide. Very sad...both stories.
DeleteI just saw the episode for the first time and living less than 100 miles from Buford , I felt a little close to the story. I disagree, the gf appeared truly upset, but she was my first gut instinct and why would he go out like that, the way he was dressed, etc. I live in this area, in the January Temps. I didn't know him at all, but I cryed as I watched. I worry constantly about my own children. I couldn't give up so easy about his cause of death.

DeleteI'm an ID junkie and just watched the Kelly Nash episode of Disappeared. For some reason, it hit me so hard and at the end when they found the body in the water, I found myself saying no.. no don't let it be Kelly. I thought the girlfriend was very genuine. Footage from the days right after show her being in a zombie like state . All 3 dogs from that trainer went to the water at the same place so I'm surprised they didn't check that out more than they did. The police assumed there had been no foul play outside of the house because the dogs did not pick up on any scents? That doesn't mean somebody didn't get Kelly out of the house without blood being shed, but then again, there was only one person on the video walking in the road, who now we have to assume was Kelly. I totally believed suicide, but if the shot was in the back of the head, that would be difficult.
ReplyDeleteYou have to remember that these shows are edited, I see where some of you are in question when it comes to the behavior of the gf, however I find her to be very truthful in regards to where things in the house wer placed, and their last night together. It is possible they had an argument of some sort, but thats not our business...I am concerned tho, with the online gamers...that whole ordeal strikes me as odd, leaving the game on idle, almost as if he wer going to return to it. Another thot I had was, the father mentioned how he was, and normally does suffer from sinus infections, Im not a dr but could it have been something that triggered some type of reaction, that could have messed with his psyche? Overall, this is an awfully sad story. As a mother of 7 kids, all you want to do is protect your children...I cannot imagine how his parents must feel. My heart goes out to them.

It didn't grow little gun legs or get snatched up by some badass glock toting badgers, and guns don't float ( do they?? ) so where the hell is it? Although I did see a silly episode of CSI where the guy tied a helium balloon to a gun so it would fly away after in order for his family to get the life insurance payout! I seriously wonder if maybe they did find the gun and have only told the family? This is such a sad, strange case, and has bothered me from the start, something is definitely off!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's necessarily a mystery as to why the gun wasn't found. If you recall in the episode the search dogs went to the edge of a pier at the lake and searchers just disregarded it. Obviously later on his body was found in the lake shortly after. If he went to the edge of the pier and pulled the trigger, not only would his body fall in the water, but likely the gun would too, and sink to the bottom. It's quite possible it wasn't found after a good faith effort, or it just wasn't searched well after the body was found. Objects large and small can disappear in water and it can be years before they are found.

Has anyone considered the possibility that he might have inadvertently witnessed the murder of Samuel and was murdered to keep him from telling anyone? Maybe he was upset with the gf and went for a walk or maybe he heard something outside and went to investigate. Is it possible the two were playing online and he heard something strange and went to check on him? It seems really strange that two young men went missing within hours of each other in such close proximity.

DeleteThere was a picture of the body still in the water taken w/o police knowledge and posted on twitter by a teenage girl who lived on the property where it was found. The twitter post which was quickly taken down, showed tiny fish gathered around a gunshot wound at the back of the head. Apparently the girlfriend fell in love 3 months after the body was found and completely detached herself from the case, refusing to speak w/ law enforcement.

Moulder planned to get Samuel help him kill Kelly bc he was going to testify about something and needed to be got rid of them Moulder killed Samuel so there would be no witnesses to connect him back to the murder of Kelly

DeleteGrew up in Buford Ga from 1980 until 2004 when I moved away. Some people can be very sweet and shady at the same time. Kelly nash's g/f had a drug problem she also lied about that night. What she said never happened. Kelly wasn't even with her that night. He didn't sleep there. Kelly did not have that close relationship with his father like they made out. His dad is a little shady. They know more about what happened to him. With a little money thrown around stuff can be sealed.
ReplyDeleteI've lived in buford my whole life. I know this case very well but something strange that happened across town in buford that I cant ever get out of my head. I use to work at waffle house on buford drive. On the morning after Kelly Nash went missing and it was all over the news. My manager called the police saying there was a scared man who was hiding behide our dumpster. HE WAS WEARING A BLACK SHIRT AND PAJAMAS!!! When I say gwinnett county police came in with their guns drawn and telling everyone that this man was armed and dangerous and to stay in the front. They did not act like they were there to rescue anyone or there to actually find this man. They came in hot and ready. Like this had been a man they were already looking for. I dont know if he took off running I dont know anything more other than the police caning running out and jumped in their cars and took off. Understand buford is a small town every one knows everyone. My aunt worked at a restaurant called Puckets where alot of gwinnett county police officers eat at. One sheriff made the comment to my aunt who was a waitress there that " the boy is tied down somewhere in lake lanier" and then laughed when she asked him if he had herd anything about the case on Kelly Nash. Gwinnett county police are one of the crookedest police force in ga. Maddox is a man who was shot in the back by police after running from them when his family reported him missing they refused to take the report caused he had warrants. later his body was found in the same place where the police shot at him after the police chase. They had his car towed but never looked for him???? I believe Kelly Nash family would never have pushed the issue if they thought that he was any kind of suicidal. but they could have settled out of court for a very large settlement n thats why they all look a little gulity and do not wish to comment any farther. It was all a cover up.

That makes no sense esp. cause you know the owners of the tracking dogs know when their dogs hit on something. 2 This family hired a very expensive!!! private investigator who informed the family that he believed Kelly was in contact with some very shady people wether it was drugs for him or more than likely his girlfriend. but the family refused to believe that and soon after fired the private investigator. 3 if Kelly was upset and went for a walk and took his gun for protection cause he was walking at a weird hour and gwinnett county stopped him( cause they always stop people walking at odd times of the night) and He told them off rip look i have a gun on me the cop more than likely wouldn't believe that he had a permit and in fear for his life he took off running seeing how the police might had been acting aggressive ( like they normally are or maybe they had a mistaken him for someone else.) Hall county was going to investigate Gwinnett county for his disappearance when they first found his body but later all charges against gwinnett county were dropped. She was to calm and only cried when family/ friends hugged her for comfort.She may have had someone do it.She knew that he might grab his gun 4 safety if he heard something around the house. Also, why the dogs didn't make any noise?It had to be someone they knew. I don't believe he killed himself.My prayers go out to the family.

ReplyDeleteWatched it last night. Obviously there was some depression going on. I think he quietly watch out his door, that's why the door was ajar, it would have woken the GF if he slammed it. He wanted to be closer to his dad and I believe he thought they would find him right away. The dogs found his location, police were not thorough in their water search. Sometimes there is no blame. Glad they were able to find him and lay him to rest and Kelly has found peace.

ReplyDeleteThe dad said he answered the call the next morning saying are you ready for your big day son? So she called from his phone, but if I’m not mistaken it said the call came into her around 430 and supposedly she was asleep an hour before that and he was gone. Very good point

I don't buy it. Always thought GF involved, for who knows what reason, or somebody else? Drove him to lake, shot him, pushed him in, and took the gun.

PS: Maybe he heard something, went out, thus door ajar, and his game goes to idle, witnessed something related to Sam Waters murder, which resulted in him being abducted, driven to lake, shot etc. Or GF involved? I'm done for now. Whole case making me crazy ...
ReplyDeleteSomething I caught onto while I was watching the disappeared episode, the girlfriend said he was sleeping on the couch that night because he had a cough and she had to get up early the next morning. I think they had a fight before he left or before she went to be, and whatever that fight was about, caused him to snap. You're definitely spot on about her demeanor. She seems like she's hiding something and holding on to some kind of guilt
ReplyDeleteThat seems quite plausible. I definitely think knows more than she is leading on to. Plus, Kelly being "sick" on the couch the night before he died is just too much of a coincidence. There very well could have been some late night domestic dispute that caused him to snap.
DeleteHer telling police there was a fight opens the door for police to start examining all the skeletons in her closet, so perhaps she didn't share any details of their dispute that night.
I think all the crying is out of guilt. If I was made to sleep out in the living room when I was sick, yeah, there'd be an argument. I thought it was supremely selfish of her to kick him out of bed because he was sick. Not a healthy relationship.

ReplyDeleteThe key to this case has to be the gun. No gun was recovered. If he shot himself, the gun would have been right by the dock, in the water, or very close by. A dead person cant fling a gun far into the water or make it disappear. It would have fallen out of his hand right where he shot himself...unless he didnt shoot himself.
ReplyDeleteThe telling is police were called because across town a scared man was hiding behind a dumpster at a restaurant wearing a dark shirt and pajama pants. No coat No gun because he didn't have one another man killed near that lake same night. There are no coincidences in criminal behavior. Someone shot him and nobody is telling what happened. Why was he hiding how much debt did drug addicted girlfriend run up. I don't believe he was home that night. Those things were dropped off to her after he was killed. I also read she died on a memorial site another suicide. Sure have lots of those in this part of Georgia. Did not mention how she died just suicide that she will be missed. Really by whom.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the girlfriend is involved. The gun question was interesting. Why did she first say the gun was missing, then later say perhaps it was just lost in all the boxes they had sitting around? Which one is it? The answer to this question is rather important considering he was found shot in the lake.
ReplyDeleteOne callous thing that struck me was how she knew he had a sinus infection but threw him out of the bedroom because she had to work the next day. That is cruel to treat someone who is obviously under the weather so badly. A loving partner would say 'Honey, take the whole bed, I'll sleep on the sofa'.
Also, she always seems to be in the shot with everyone and crying harder than even the sister and mother. Once I read that he was found in the lake and with a gunshot I thought that's it, she absolutely did it. She said that the video game he was playing was stopped due to inactivity, so I wonder if the police went through the game to see how far advanced the game was. Someone who plays the game all the time or is a fairly good gamer will be far more advanced into the game than another who doesn't play as much. If it was at a level lower than what he would normally be at, then that could point to her setting the game up to look like he was playing to buy herself time and solidify an alibi.
Now, some people may not agree with me, but the father looked a bit too animated and a matter-of-fact also. He didn't seem like a father who was mourning his son too much. It was all about how the son helped HIM, not the other way around. A bit narcissistic. I wonder if he helped her transport his son's body to the lake.
I just don't see Kelly killing himself right by his dad's house. another possible theory is someone was sending the Dad a message that he would never forget. I don't know if he was truly shot in the back of the head or if that is a rumor but that is execution style. Too weird and too sad.
ReplyDeleteAlso valid point, someone did mention he was shady, but we never know. I did look it up it does seem the gF is deceased. After having one suspicious death and one suicidal end to relationships. The whole thing is crazy and the way the show literally just stopped and that’s all says something. Just no clue what it is, I do know that whole area is beautiful but after googling, their news is terrifying. Especially the deaths on the lake. Lots of them. Lots.
DeleteI've read everyone's comments about being suspicious about the girlfriend. But I keep wondering how this tiny female would have been able to force walk a man, trained in self defense, 2 miles outside. Yes, she could have had him at gun point. But he could have easily overpowered her and either got the gun or run away. I really think he shot himself in the mouth, and the bullet exited out the back of his skull. It would explain why 5 years later there is nothing new on this. The family doesn't want it publicized.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable! Way too many facts not verified. Way too many points ignored and sad to see any police department letting it not be investigated and verified. Family wishes or not. Somewhere there is the Freedom of Information Act. Too many points involved not verified to not be able to see several in the Freedom of Info Act. And if the local and/or any other government hiding such info? That is a MAJOR concern, that does not say much for the governments we have established for our freedoms. IF it was not suicide who is out there that did it? And why? And if it was suicide the public should know to help ease concerns of foul play and safety as that is why our laws and government have been established. All the very fishey points need to be researched.
