The Disappearance of Brittanee Drexel

The case of Brittanee Drexel has always resonated with me for a few reasons. She was only 17 at the time of her disappearance, a young and vulnerable age. For her parents this had to be an absolute nightmare. They never granted her permission to travel from NY to SC for spring break so for them to be notified that she was missing in the Myrtle Beach area must have been devastating, as she wasn't even supposed to be there in the first place. It was your classic case of teenage rebellion. She left to have a good time and deal with the consequences of her parents when she returned. But she never made it home.

It was late April in 2009. Brittanee was a 17 year old high school junior living in Rochester, NY. She asked her mother to go to Myrtle Beach for spring break but her mother said no. Instead they agreed she could stay with a friend locally. In spite of what her mother said, Brittanee went against her wishes and embarked on a road trip to South Carolina with her friends. During her trip, she spoke to her mother frequently but instead of telling her she was in SC she lied and said she was still in NY. It has been said the trip wasn't particularly enjoyable for her. She wasn't getting along with her friends at the time and was often confiding in her boyfriend back in NY during her time there.

Brittanee was last seen on April 25, 2009 at around 8:30 pm. Security cameras captured her entering and then leaving the Blue Water Resort hotel at that time. Afterwards, she walked to visit friends at another nearby hotel. A traffic camera spots her after leaving her friend's hotel. By about 9 pm that night she sent a text message to her boyfriend in NY. After that, all communication from her cell phone abruptly stopped. No further calls or text messages came from Brittanee's phone. The traffic camera she initially walked passed should have captured her image as she walked back, but she never did. She was gone, never to be seen again.

Years later, the case remains unsolved. Searches have yielded nothing as to her whereabouts, though a pair of sunglasses that may have belonged to her were found in a swampy area south of Myrtle Beach.

Based on her cell phone pings, at approximately 9:30 that night her phone hits a tower in Surfside Beach, 7 miles south of Myrtle Beach. By Midnight her phone pings a tower in Georgetown County, which is 50 miles south of the Myrtle Beach Hotel she was staying at. After that her cell phone did not communicate with any other towers, as it was either turned off or the battery died.

In terms of Brittanee's disappearance, there's a few trains of thought as to what happened. Initially, one of her friends from Rochester, NY, that went with her to SC, was considered a person of interest. He and some other friends in the group abruptly checked out of their hotel around 1 am the following morning and headed back to NY. Alternatively, it is believed Brittanee may have simply been abducted by a stranger(s). Though, her mother on the other hand, thinks it might be a case of human trafficking.

Other than following the cell phone trail, we don't have a lot to go on here. However, there are a few things that stand out to me. First, the sudden loss of communication is telling. Around 9 pm, when she sent her last text message, something undoubtedly happened that rendered her unable to use her cell. No calls made or even a simple text message of "help". She couldn't access her phone, yet it remained on for about 3 more hours, making contact with several towers. That very much seems to suggest she was going about her business and was taken by surprise. If she perhaps met a group of strangers, decided to hang out with them and left by car, you would think at the first moment she felt uneasy, she would send a text indicating it. It doesn't seem like it was a slow culmination of danger, rather she immediately was in trouble and had no way of communicating it.

Being a young girl staying in Myrtle Beach, it is very likely she met new people and I do think it is a possibility she may have simply met a bad group of people. But, going back to the abrupt lack of cell use, I tend to think she would have at the very least sent a text indicating she felt uneasy with any new people she met. We know she was walking from hotel to hotel, in a relatively busy area, yet she still managed to vanish. She didn't make it back to her hotel and presumably there are no unaccounted for incoming calls from other people who might be involved (unless police are withholding that info). So it doesn't seem like she had a planned meeting with anyone.

To me it seems unlikely she voluntarily went off with someone, without telling anyone. But - it is is not impossible. She was having a bad time there, she wasn't really getting along with friends and maybe that could have been the catalyst to take a chance and venture off with some new people she may have met while walking home. She went there for fun, and perhaps a chance for fun presented itself while she was heading back to the hotel. Maybe a car full of younger guys invited her to a party and against her best judgement she got in the car and joined them.

However, in the case of Brittanee Drexel I tend to believe she was abducted against her will. The area is generally busy and one would think an abduction on a busy street would be seen by others, right? We don't know her exact path of travel but she didn't necessarily have to travel on a busy street. In fact she could have used side streets, cut through dark parking lots and managed to avoid busy areas with more pedestrians. I keep coming back to the fact she so quickly lost contact with everyone and that leads me to think she was quickly taken by surprise and forced into a vehicle. Based on the timeline of her phone, it seems very possible she could have been taken to Surfside Beach and was subsequently murdered there. After that she was transported south to a more remote area to be disposed of. Likely her
phone was either destroyed or the battery simply died at that point, but that general area seems likely to be where she was taken to hide the crime that was committed.

Sure, it is possible maybe her friends were involved. Maybe she met some seedy characters while at Myrtle Beach. For me, the most likely scenario is that she was seen walking at night, a petite girl, all alone in a desolate area off the main strip and viewed as an easy target. Unfortunately for Brittanee, she never made it back to her hotel.

  1. I think she was walking and someone could've seen her and just waited at a stop sign or simply pulled up and grabbed her, threw her in their vehicle and took off. She was walking up and down that same Blvd for the last few days so more than likely someone saw her and was watching her walk, waited for the perfect opportunity to grab her and simply came up on her and did so. It would only take 10 seconds to grab a girl of her size and be gone. I do remember reading early on in the investigation that Peter told friends back home in new York that Phil oberer had raped and strangled brittanee. There was messages that someone had posted about it which were deleted since then but that could simply be a rumor. The group did talk about it back home and when people were asking Peter what he did with brittanee he'd say why dont you ask phil. I dont know if the cops looked into that too much but it is a possibility. He was Jens boyfriend but I notice in the pictures hes always close to brittanee. The other thing that i feel is a stronger possibly is that the guys they had as a person of interest, Shawn Taylor and his friends that was accused of grabbing the other girl right off the blvd where brittanee was walking, i believe they are truly the ones responsible for brittanee. They lived nearby where her phone last pinged and they knew the area. The brother of shawn murderd a girl already and is locked up for it. I believe thats who got brittanee. It was more than one person who nabbed her. The foot traffic wasnt as busy that night on the bkvd being that most spring brreakers already went home. I highly doubt she was trafficked and even if she was would be dead by now. I believe she died that night and they threw her body into that swamp and the animals took her down low into the swamp. I dont think this was the first time this person has done this. Its sad and I wish her family would get closure. I know they hang onto belief that shes alive but its very unlikely. There's always hope and that's all we have till the case is solved. I dont think Raymond Moody had anything to do with her disappearance either. After everything Ive read it always circles back to Shawn Taylor and his friends.

  2. Brozowitz is clearly a self centered arrogant asshole, but I don't think he was involved. His name gets dragged through the mud because of his own actions; he was more concerned with his reputation than showing any sort of compassion to a missing girl.

But I think you are right. Moody is a viable suspect but Taylor seems even more likely to be involved. I believe multiple people were involved and it's just a matter of time before someone slips up and confesses or implicates someone else to lighten their own punishment.

    Thanks for looking!

On 6/8/16 there was a press conference regarding BD. Doesn't seem like many new details but she is presumed to have gone south from Myrtle Beach and was held against her will for several days and then killed...

    1. Yeah, the press conference was interesting.

Just speculating here but there had to be a reason as to why they did this. They didn't exactly share much new insight, but I think at some point they received some credible leads and they just need help from the public to move forward with an warrant or arrest.

They were very specific when they mentioned she went south of Myrtle Beach stayed there for a few days and then was killed. I wonder how they know that? Maybe that was a lead they deemed credible. Also, her cell phone pinged and basically led them to this area, so I wonder if it pinged from Myrtle and then ended up in the Georgetown area where it continued to ping for several days and then on Wednesday (I believe they mentioned they presumed she was killed on that day) the phone stopped pinging?

Obviously, police and FBI don't want to reveal too much but this definitely leads to more questions than answers. I think they have a lot more information than they are telling the public. However, they are still missing a few pieces to move towards an arrest.

  6. Here's why I think they are keeping it hush hush and trying to get something solid. In the killing of Shannon mc conaughey the Taylor boys got away with her murder because the cops didn't have any solid evidence even though one of the boys witnessed the murder and told the cops what he saw. They found Shannon's body in the same area where Brittanees phone last pinged. The four guys involved Jacob Taylor,Randall Taylor and two friends kidnapped, raped and shot Shannon. Randall was the one who actually shot her and raped her, he was too anxious and didn't let the other guys have their turn with her then he shot her. There was a car on video the same time on ocean Blvd that police saw that the person is a person of interest but the didn't say the name. I still say it was the Taylor brothers. I think maybe the girl kidnapped mistook Shaun as one of his brothers. Shaun has been married for 19 years, works and wasn't in the area at the time of that kidnapping attempt of the girl they tried to pull into a van not far from where Brittanee was taken. Its all connected , I'm just trying to piece it together. I think Peters connection is that he and the others knew the Taylor brothers somehow but I don't think Peter knew what actually happened to Brit. The Taylor brothers have been involved with more than we know, burned out vehicles, missing people, stolen vehicles that are linked to murders, and trafficking. I think it's just a matter of time and they will be arrested and hopefully Brit will get justice. This is just my opinion from reading all over the internet and putting pieces of the puzzle together. What do you guys think?

  7. I agree, I think the likely suspects here are behind this all. If it wasn't ST, family or someone he knew did it. I would imagine he knows the truth, if by chance he wasn't involved. It's a small community, I wouldn't be surprised if MANY people knew exact details with this.

Though, I think it's just a matter of time before an arrest now.

POS kids know something. The nightclubs and street gangs are all connected through drugs; now trafficking. Back then "Backpage." Brittnee was mad at her parents, considered a 'runaway' by her friends.

Club promoter is a sociopath, maybe a psychopath, seeking power, drugs, money.

He's connected to -- underworld. How the hell did he get an attorney like he did?

Taylor Gang administer pain, use drugs and intimidate to get power.

The girls - (friends) - just want drugs and a good time. I know those types, they are not opposed to riding the D-Train to get it, so why NOT bring Brittnee, not to get her killed, but she's hot, so she's useful.
Maybe we can put on a sexy show for the boys, get more drugs, maybe we can ride some D and get more drugs.

So this group of people all have a parasitic relationship, throw in a so called "runaway",,,, who is being paraded around a club VIP Room, who later refuses to cooperate (won't put out) and turns out to NOT be so cooperative. She's hot AF and young, so she's literally being screamed at and leered at in the streets, she has to get an escort home another night.

She's gotten somebody's attention. Someone was watching her. Jennifer & the club promoter said they could 'sell' her prior to that? IS that what I read?

I don't think they meant SELL HER LIKE into a sex slave ring, I think they meant, sell her for sex.. prostitution. They may have gotten an 'ask' and tried to set it up, and later realized they f;ed up.

Maybe he got her hooked up somewhere else with another group or man, using the Taylor gang as the ones to nab her. Backpage was big then. They'd drug her, beat her and rape her repeatedly; sell her around their area... at a trap house.. then push her on to another group, to another region, and sell her daily, weekly through apps and Backpage, they thought she was a runaway, but she actually had people wanting her her home. and the national media had her story and posters everywhere.

I believe she was moved multiple times, but was too recognizable so she was killed. Otherwise, the kid is good for it.

Honestly I think the kids knew immediately and are terrified theyre next. If they talk and got in over their head.

      So

She had no $ - less than a $100? The 'friends' were NOT here friends.

In a news clip I just watched in the mcclellanville area a man said the kids at the high school brag about knowing who did it.

    1. I hope so. It seems things are really heating up for the alleged perps now with all this new information coming out.

Although, I had similar thoughts as to what happened to her, so while reading the FBI report wasn't a surprise but it definitely is alarming to finally have details.

This has to be the biggest nightmare for any parent. I can't imagine dealing with something like this.

This might be a tough conviction but at least for the family I hope justice is served.

  11. I believe she didn't use the phone cause she was picked up by someone she knows. I would strongly be investigating the biological father. The route her phone pings on is route 17 and why go south of where you live? Her father lives in Tampa Florida and route 17 from Myrtle drops you down to Florida. Francis Marion National Forest is right next to Georgetown on that same route. I believe her body sadly to say will be in connection with route 17 in that forest or if someone took alternate route by mistake she could even be by Jamestown.I can't imagine what her family is going through but in these cases it's more than likely someone very close to her than a total stranger, I would exhaust all efforts on persons close to her before a total stranger cause that's how things in these cases are missed and overlooked.

  13. Did her so called friends buy drugs from the Taylors? Pretty safe to believe Deshaun Timmy trafficked more than sex. I read in a Facebook post that the mother of Brittanee believed the people she was with were connected to whatever happened. Jen Oberer and Alanna Lippo sound like sleazy , jealous, backstabbers. Jen Oberer posted the ride home pictures without Brittanee back when it happened and it appeared the so called friends could have cared less. Most normal people, even if you did not like someone, would be upset about someone they traveled with disappearing into thin air. The reactions of her traveling companions was very strange to say the least. Thinking none of the so called friends wanted their drug use in national headlines. They even claimed to not know her? Nice cover in case she was found and started pointing fingers at their favorite Myrtle Drug dealer Timmy Deshaun
